The Flying Fish
Located on
Disney’s Boardwalk
Dinner -
January 2003
After checking in and confirming our priority seating with a young attractive
cast member at the restaurant we were given an electronic pager that would alert
us when our table was ready. With this 21st century “hey your table is ready”
device we wandered out onto the Boardwalk. Just outside the restaurant a group
of street performers had set up shop and were entertaining guests that had
stopped to enjoy the show. The atmosphere on the Boardwalk even without
the performers is relaxing and fun and can make for a pleasant wait.
Once seated at our table we surveyed the menu and from among the four appetizers
or “Starters” listed the “Peeky Toe” Crab Cakes with “Flying Fish” Slaw and
Ancho-Chile Remoulade was a unanimous choice for all three in our party. Bradlee
our server then offered suggestions and opinions on the entrees. With Bradlee’s
enthusiastic approval one of my dinner companions selected the Rack of Colorado
Lamb with Potato Risotto, Roasted Winter Vegetables and Thyme Jus. My other
dinner companion settled on the Oak Fired Space Coast Shrimp with Green
Apple-Celery Root Risotto and Truffle Nage. I was tempted by the Coriander
Crusted Yellowfin Tuna, which I had on a previous occasion, but at the
recommendation of Bradlee I decided to broaden my culinary horizon and selected
the Potato Wrapped Black Grouper with Creamy Leek Fondue and Red Wine Reduction
as my entrée.
A bottle of King Estate Oregon Pinot Noir ’99 was selected to compliment the
meal and was shared by two of us at the table.
The Crab Cakes were exceptional. Even the New Englander
in the party had to agree that, although maybe not quite as good as “we used to
make back home” they were nonetheless very tasty.
The Rack of Colorado Lamb was the first entrée placed on the table and this was
somehow befitting. What a presentation. My other dinner companion seemed to
settle nicely into his Oak Fired Space Coast Shrimp. Although the Potato Wrapped
Black Grouper paled slightly by comparison in presentation to the Lamb I was not
disappointed with how it tasted. The combination of ingredients continued to
satisfy and delight me from the first bite to the last. But I must confess out
of the corner of my eye I do believe that I watched with some envy each bite of
the Rack of Lamb that my friend so enjoyed.
Ever since the first time I dined at the Flying Fish the desserts have always been
one of the best parts of the experience for me. Tonight we individually ordered
but all shared and enjoyed the Warm Valrhona Chocolate Soufflé Cake, the Bababa
Napoleon with Crispy Phyllo Dough, Vanilla Creme Brulee and Warm Carmel Sauce,
and the Chocolate-Hazelnut Bombe with Creme Anglaise and Chocolate Sauce.
I have never been disappointed in the food presented here and only on one
occasion did I find the service a little distant, so if you are looking for some
fine dining with an exciting atmosphere do enjoy the Flying Fish at Disney’s
Boardwalk.
