AUGUST 2008 DISNEY WONDER CRUISE

Disney Wonder Bahamas Cruise

The Disney Wonder sailed from Nassau as the sun was dropping swiftly into the beautiful turquoise water of the Bahamas. We had spent the day touring Nassau. We took in the straw market where local vendors tempt you into purchasing their wares. The products range from handmade straw hats to delicate jewelry fashioned from shells or other items found on this seven mile by twenty one mile island and then on to the Atlantis Resort

A bus trip with a well informed and talkative guide was both exhilarating and informative. This gentleman believed he always had the right of way, no matter what, just toot the horn a couple of times and the other traffic was to give way to him. And everyone drives on the wrong side of the road, English style. We ended our mini tour at the fabulous Atlantis Resort. The Atlantis dominates the skyline of Nassau and is as beautiful as it is grandiose. The Atlantis has high end shopping on premises where you will find such stores as Gucci, Tiffany, and numerous jewelry stores loaded with bling.

The highlight of the Atlantis tour was the fantastic aquarium. The tanks are filled with great specimens found in the Caribbean, including Goliath Grouper, Rays with enormous wing spans, one that measured over ten feet. There are also period wall etchings and dive equipment from centuries past for everyone to enjoy.

The Atlantis also has a large casino with table games and many hundreds of slot machines. We found those to be too tight to want to spend much time in their casino.

This was the second day of a delightful cruise aboard the Disney Wonder that we boarded in Cape Canaveral Florida. Now we were heading to the Disney private island called Castaway Cay. After a great dinner we joined the Pirates party on Deck Nine. This included lots of loud music and dancing, laughing and having a great time which was followed by an incredible fireworks display. But hold the fort that wasn’t the end of the night, Disney then opened a huge desert buffet complete with all kinds of beautiful deserts and an ice sculpture of a pirate for a center piece.

We awoke the next morning as the Disney Wonder backed into the dock on the Disney private island. Here on Castaway Cay we found crystal clear water with white sand beaches to lie on, one for children and another reserved for adults. After a leisurely breakfast we disembarked and walked along the path beside the beach where the pirate ship is anchored. You can’t tour this old ship because it is the home to some of the ghosts from Pirates of the Caribbean. Castaway Cay offers swimming, snorkeling, fishing and parasailing. We chose to spend the day lying on the beach soaking up rays and reading.

This was our last evening on the Disney Wonder where we enjoyed another delicious dinner and later a stroll along the deck in the moonlight. As another cruise was coming to an end we started planning our next cruise destination. One more to the Caribbean this year then in 2009 that long awaited cruise to Alaska. Come join us.
