Touring Walt Disney World in the Summer
Simple and Practical Tips
Florida’s frequent and sudden rain showers along with its
unrelenting sun make a summer trip to the most “Magical Place on
Earth” one that may require a little extra thought and planning.
Here are a few tips that can help.
Arrive Early
This is true for any season but a must during the summer. Arrive
30-45 minutes before the stated opening time and take advantage of
the coolest portion of the day.
Hurray for Mom!
Here are some plan ahead and pack ahead ideas that will have the
troops thinking you are a genius.
- Drinks
Freeze sippy drinks or bottle water the night before.
- Water mister spray fans
Pick one up before you go at one-third the price of ones sold in
the parks
- Umbrella
A small compact light colored umbrella will come handy during that
sudden rain shower or to shelter you from the sun while waiting in
a long line.
- Ponchos
Those sold at Disney are bright yellow so go for another color. In
doing so those in your group will be easily spotted in a
never-ending sea of yellow.
- Sunscreen
Liberal applications in the morning before you head out and bring
some sunscreen wipes that come in individually wrapped packets.
- Clothing
Pack and wear light colored clothing.
- Stroller
Taking a stroller? Most strollers are dark in color so consider
bringing a light colored towel or cloth to cover it with. Both the
light color and the extra shade provided will help keep junior
comfortable.
Those aren’t dogs barking
Wear a good pair of sneakers but nothing new. Make sure they a
broken in and comfortable.
Wear socks that are not 100% cotton and consider applying some
antifungal talcum powder. Bring bandages and be on the look out for
hot spots. If you feel a hot spot developing inspect your feet. Put
a bandage on if needed and a dry pair of socks.
“Mister this town isn’t big enough” for all 60,000 of us
Sometimes like the line in the western says you just have to get out
of Dodge.
Crowds during the summer months at the Magic Kingdom can easily
reach 60,000 guests on a given day. The peak time for crowds is
often found in the early afternoon. So when you find the waits and
heat a little unbearable take a break.
Towel please
If your magical moment with Mickey is starting to feel more like
yard work than fun head back to your hotel for a swim and a break.
Return later when you are refreshed and ready to go at it again.
If you are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort this can easily be
accomplished and is worth the effort.
| Disney Note: In making your decision you should consider how
late the park is open and whether a return will be worth the effort.
|
If going back to your hotel is not feasible or you plan on making a
day of it our advice is still the same. Take a break.
Which way to the Hundred Acre Wood?
One possibility that allows for a nice break and chance to recharge
your batteries is to make a priority seating for a late lunch at a
full service restaurant or character meal. Pack a snack to get you
through the morning then around 1:30 to 2:00pm sit down to a
relaxing, nourishing and enjoyable experience that can be a welcomed
and much needed break from the heat, crowds and lines.

In the Magic Kingdom a late lunch at the Crystal Palace is a great
idea. Prices are less than dinner and you can make it your big meal
of the day. The restaurant will be winding down from lunch and you
should not feel rushed.
All Aboard the Walt Disney World Railroad
For another quick and refreshing break take a ride on the Walt
Disney World Railroad and break out the some of the drinks you froze
the night before. The ice cold drink along with the breeze created
by the 15mph that these real steam driven locomotives generate will
go a long way in reminding you that you are on vacation.
Raft to Tom Sawyers Island
This is a
Great place to retreat to especially when the crowds and
temperatures are at their peak. Here you will find lots of shade, as
well as refreshments at Aunt Polly’s Dockside Inn. So if your
touring plan begins to break down or you just plain need a break,
give this one a try.
