Lunch -
January 2003
Well, it’s official. During a trip to Walt Disney World that had seen
several enjoyable and memorable lunches this was hands down without a
doubt the best lunch experience of the trip. This was in no small measure
due to the efforts of our server Yassine. Even as we sat dressed in jeans
and sweatshirts in this eloquent restaurant with it’s tables draped in
white linen he did not hesitate to afford us as he put it a “fine dining
experience”.
After our drink orders were in we proceeded to choose an appetizer from
the half dozen “Introductions” offered on the lunch menu. I settle on the
Coconut Shrimp with Gingered Beets, Minzed-madarin Orange Salad and Minted
Citrus-soy Dipping Sauce. It probably took me longer to type it than it
did to finish off this delicious, scrumptious and mouthing watering dish.
The two other appetizers that graced the table that afternoon were the
Slow Roasted Chicken Quesadilla with Jack Cheese, Cilantro Cream and Mango
Salsa and a bowl of Mixed Field Greens tossed in Black Pepper Cabernet
Vinaigrette with Sun-dried Cranberry Bleu Cheese. The Chicken Quesadillas
in particular were well received.
On to the entrees or “Lunch Center Stage” as it is referred to at The
Brown Derby. Having enjoyed a Grouper dish the night before I opted for
the Grilled New York Strip Steak Marinated in Ale with Chimichurri and
Boniata Mashed Potatoes. During this trip I was fortunate to enjoy dinner
at The Flying Fish and The California Grill two of the finest dining spots
at Walt Disney World and enjoyed both immensely, but the presentation of
this dish, in the middle of the day, in the middle of a busy theme park
was extraordinary. And it tasted every bit as good as it looked. My lunch
partners ordered the Pan-fired Grouper over Palsamic Roasted Asparagus,
Lemon Plugra Butter Sauce topped with Sweet Onion Marmalade and the
Barbecue Chicken Caesar Salad with Parmesan Cheese and Grilled Flatbread.
Fortunately or unfortunately I so enjoyed my entrée that I failed to
officially record any comments on theirs, but from the expressions I
remember seeing on their faces I feel it would be safe to assume that both
dishes were enjoyable and satisfying.
It is worth mentioning here again that the attentive service only further
enhanced the meal. The table was promptly and seemingly with effort
cleared after each course. Drinks were automatically replaced with fresh
ones. This was accomplished by various members of the wait staff an
unselfish way of servicing the guests that I have noticed here on previous
occasions.
As Yessine presented us with the “Grande Finale” or desserts menu it was
obvious he was not done with us yet. With Yessine’s urging both of my
friends ordered the Grapefruit Cake “A Brown Derby Original” Light layers
of Yellow cake with Grapefruit Cream Cheese Icing and Citrus Candy. I was
a sucker for the White Chocolate Cheesecake served with Fresh Strawberry
Coulis.
What can I say? Except Bravo and thank you Yassine.
